The second feature I am adding to the blog to appear randomly is Deep Thoughts by Viv. Does anyone remember Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy on Saturday Night Live back in the day? They usually were neither here nor there while playing inspirational like music in the back round. Here is a sample one:
My deep thoughts will sometimes be deep or pose a question. Like, whoa that Viv is truly an intellectual brain child, so wise beyond her young looking 33 years. Some of the time they will be like, whoa what primo stuff is Viv smoking over there?! ( "The Hills" is back, which means I begin my excessive use of the word like. I hear in California it is perfectly o.k. to start a sentence with the word like. Since Surf City is almost a sure thing for me I am implementing the word in my immature vocabulary regularly)
I am working out about 16-21 hours per week. Am I 100 pounds? Hell to the no! I know I have to start focusing on better nutrition. Usually when my training hours are less my healthy food choices come natural. When my training hours are in excess (not my Coach's fault. It is all the extra work hours at the gym. I am still trying to find a balance of work and training.) I tend to make bad food choices. Like, not because I think I have burned x amount of calories I can eat that kind of thing. It is more like that tuna, salad, veggies (insert healthy options here) is just not appetising to me at this juncture. I have to consciously make a hard effort here to get the rest of this weight off.
Another thing I think about is recovery nutrition. I sometimes have three workouts in a day. Is there something I should be eating right after workouts to prepare my body for the next workout to properly replenish the body to aid in recovery?

Deep Thoughts by Viv Edition I
"When you go in for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges" by Jack Handy
To use recovery nutrition or not?
If so, what works for you?
That is the question??????????

I do carbs before cardio, veg-based proteins after. Stretch in between workouts. I try to stay away from the soy (mostly because I have a mild allergy to it). One way I keep my nutrition in check is have 7 simple "meals" all 100-200 calories that I carry around since I might run in the morning, work, bike or something around lunch, work more, then go for a hike or what ever after work. But it's all like fleeting and I have no idea when/if these things really are going to happen. But I'm still like starving all the time.
Wow.
I just "liked."
You are infectious.
And why aren't we 100 pounds dagnabbit! ;-)
Loves x
SURF CITY YYYEEEE to the HAWWWWWWW. Sufers with no shirts, beaches, ocean, did I say surfers with no shirts already?
Oy, I'm not the one to ask. I'm horrible with the nutrition aspect of things. Whatever you're not supposed to it, I'm sure I eat :P
Like, I'm totally not qualified to give you advice on this subject. My diet is, like, terrible. It primarily consists of beer, wings, and philly cheesesteaks, so, like, sorry dude!

that recovery nutrition is a HARD ONE and so unique to the individual.
have you ever read jen sinklers blog survival of the fittest??
hearting the jack handy,
Miz.
Do you follow Tri Marni's blog? She is a sports nutritionist and puts all kind of good stuff on her blogs. I've met her and she's a cool tri-chica (are there any other kinds? :-) )
Word is you need electrolytes (drink) and 100 to 200 calorie snack within 30 minutes after working out, preferably with a 3 to 1 carb to protein ratio. Me? I just go for the cheeze its :-)
Then a good meal within 2 hours. A lot of peeps drink a smoothie. I need to get on the smoothie train. They are tasty after all!!
I do the same thing. Slacking on workouts? I eat great. Working out a lot? I eat like crap. That's probably why I've only lost 2 pounds in 2 months!
i am the complete opposite (which makes no sense), if i am slacking on the workouts i eat crap, when i am working out i eat really good. you would think it would be the opposite.
yahhhh for surf city!
i eat a carb/protein mix after workouts, especially long runs. just depends on what i am doing but i definitely refuel after workouts.
I love that Wes gives the big ole fancy stuff and then just says he goes for cheese its. That cracked me up.
Jebus Cribus, lady, three work outs a day? And you're asking us??? I have the same issues though, the harder I work out, the more the healthy stuff doesn't appeal and the more I want a big greasy cheeseburger and fries. The less I have to fuel workouts the better off I am. I don't have a very good gauge and oftern way over do it.
When you master this, you can school us all. :D

oh crap. trigger happy.
I am like totally jealous of all of your workouts!
Like, I totally catch myself using like too much...
I do a protein smoothie after a long workout. But, I'm also the opposite of you- I always have an easy time eating healthy when I'm working out a lot and eat crap when I'm being lazy.
Chocolate milk or soya chocolate milk,
I agree with Wes, fruit smoothies, anything that won't give me indigestion!! Like does that help? LOL....
oooo, I'll have to check out Surf City...cool Momma....
I try to have a smoothie after a hard workout.
Have you thought about talking to a nutritionist to get some advice?
LOVE the Deep Thoughts, I'm looking forward to more of them.
If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might be, if they screamed all the time for no good reason.
That makes me think of my brother right away - deep thoughts by jack handy. So funny!! That is ridiculous you are working out so much. Why can't you eat whatever you want? I ask myself the same question. Recovery - sounds like it with 3 workouts a day - something high protein mixed with carbs??
What do I know. That is what I eat after a long run and only time I eat whatever I want the rest of the day.
also, so you peeps know it rained during Surf City last year. Poured in fact. I don't think I got warm until halfway through the second quarter of the super bowl.
And I only ran the 5K...
Talk about trigger happy, I'm click happy.... My post was as follows:
I am going to go on the record as being a Californian who says like too much and is trying to change it.
I'm not a valley girl, unless you count the central valley, which no ones does, so I guess I picked it up from tv.
Re: recovery nutrition. I really like Luna's dark chocolate recovery drink, but word on the street (in this case the street is a nutritionist that gave a talk to my tri group) is that chocolate milk has proven to be just as good as any of the fancy recovery drinks out there for "normal" athletes.
Now someone who's workout out like you and Michael Phelps, I just don't know.
You should give Phelps a ring though, just to ask...
You are in workout overdrive! For me, I always have a protein shake waiting for me after those long runs. I have noticed a difference in my recovery when I don't have them within that 30 minutes after the workout window.
Surf City looks like a great race! I was looking at doing the Las Vegas half in Dec., but now I might have to race Surf city instead!
A nutrition major in college once told me a glass of chocolate milk makes a great post workout recovery snack because it's got the right balance of everything you need.
There was a little bopper in RW about a month or so ago that had 4 recovery snacks. I remember one was a piece of turkey in a whole wheat tortilla. I liked that because it's so simple. I normally don't recovery eat though. :>X Instead I try to eat something ahead of time like a pbj sandwich that is not on my diet but has the right mix of protein-carbs to fuel the workout....
Like I'm totally excited for you to like do Surf City. Like I totally love that race (Just pray it doesn't rain this year). If I don't have a work event (most likely not) I will fo sho be there. Like totally.
After I workout hard, I just make a smoothie with a banana. Then I'll have sandwich or something. Exciting stuff, huh?
PS: My smoothie is only chocolate soy milk with frozen bananas. Or Vanilla soy milk with frozen berries. Simple.
I love scrambled eggs after a long run. If not, give me some Endurox.
Definitely need a goo recovery meal/drink of carbs and protein. I actually read in one of the running or tri mags that chocolate mile is actually an excellent recovery drink
My personal trainer swears by a whey protein shake after workout. She sent me reading material on it and everything. If you are interested I can email you the info.
Like needs to be followed with a "duuuuude" to be totally So. Cal. and not only can you start a sentence with Like, you must throw the word in, like, every other, like, word...duuuuuude. For example:
Like, duuuuude, I, like, really have, like, terrible eating habits too. But, like, duuuuude...Jack Handy and SNL completely, like, cracked me up!
Yes, I listen to LOTS of high school kids talk. I can't even come close to the number of "likes" they throw into sentences out here. I'm usually, like, "whaaaaaa?"
If your being hammered during the day, try having a whey shake before you go to bed, it'll help boost your HGH levels and recovery
I, like, totally love Jack Handy.
Oh, and I'm really happy to hear all these peeps say that I should have a big ole glass of chocolate milk after a hard workout. Nice!
In all honesty, I've never been enough of an athlete to worry about appropriate workout nutrition before. I was just always more worried about not porking up any further. But this is good info for me now.
Dang Viv, 3 workouts a day!!! you are my hero.
I have no advice for post workout nutrition. I usually head for junk after a hard workout.
Do French fries and chicken wings count as nutrition?
I am going to try to get myself into the protein powder nonsense. I am like a little kid though. I eat Carnation Instant Breakfast with organic skim milk and an organic banana before I hit the gym. Only think that doesn't make me puke.
I will let you know if I find a good brand (ie not like eating chalk) powder or shake.
little mini shakes..smoothies are good after working out.... if i may be so bold to suggest that to you.....
I am sorry but proper nutrition is not my strength. I struggle so much with this topic that I could puke! haha.
I am so far loving Viv's Corner and Deep Thoughts, and will look forward to their random appearances.
Surf City looks great. The Hubs has family in Huntington Beach, and it's gorgeous there (although in Feb it might be a little chilly, but what do I know- in Utah we'll have 2 feet of snow!)
I love chocolate milk (Ovaltine) after a workout, but I really need to jump on the protein shake or smoothie bandwagon. My blender konked out a while back, and I haven't bought a new one.
Are you talking about Surf City half marathon? I really want to do this race but don't know anybody else doing it. My brother lives not to far from Huntington. Let me know if you are going to do this and I would love to do it with you.
Like, good questions! I also need to work on my nutrition...I am back at WW, so that's a start! BTW, I finally got to watch The Hills last night...love it!!! Oh and love surf city and surfers...in fact, I married one!
I LOVED deep thoughts on SNL. But, I'm sure gonna enjoy reading yours. You always crack me up.
I hear ya on the nutrition. I have no problem with the working out, it's the food I have problems with.
